It’s likely that what’s holding you back from achieving your business and career goals is your mindset. As I’m sure you’ve heard before, our thoughts create our reality; training our thoughts and developing a leadership mindset is the key to unlocking your business or career goals.
I believe that we all have the potential to have the wildly successful business or career of our dreams – if we are prepared to work hard on identifying what’s holding us back and refining our leadership mindset.
For most of us women, a leadership mindset isn’t something we’re born with. It’s developed by a continual process of digging deep into what’s holding us back, overcoming those obstacles and refining our thought processes along the way. It’s a bit of a cliché, but think of your leadership mindset as a muscle – the more you work on it, the stronger it becomes.
What is leadership mindset anyway?
Leadership mindset can be broken down into three core elements: growth mindset; money mindset; and vision mindset. Let’s have a look at each of these one by one:
The idea of growth mindset was introduced back in the 1980s by Dr Carol Dweck. Dr Dweck’s research demonstrated that some people believe their intelligence can be developed and improved throughout their life. This growth mindset motivates them to continually learn and improve.
Their growth mindset makes them more likely to embrace challenges, persist in the face of obstacles, listen to and learn from criticism and find inspiration in the success of others. This outlook is what helps them reach ever-higher levels of achievement.
Those with a fixed mindset, on the other hand, see their intelligence, skills and talents as fixed. This means they’re more likely to give up, avoid challenges, ignore useful feedback and feel threatened by the success of others. Individuals with a fixed mindset tend not to reach their full potential.
The next aspect you’ll need to consider is your money mindset. Many of us have a tricky relationship with money. We might believe that money is inherently bad; it breeds corruption, greed and the destruction of the planet. Perhaps you have negative thoughts about your self-worth holding you back. Or that earning money is hard; that you’ll have to work longer hours than you are able to and you’ll lose touch with family or friends along the way. Maybe you feel guilty about charging your clients and are chronically under-valuing your service.
By digging deep into our beliefs about money we can identify what is preventing us from overcoming our under-earning and develop strategies to start attracting the abundant lifestyle we dream of.
A vision mindset is all about having a strong belief in the future state you want to realise. Whether that’s launching a business or securing that six-figure salary, being able to visualise the future and clearly communicate that to your support team is a vital part of successful leadership.
A vision mindset ensures that we hold on to our vision even when all around us seems to be going to pieces. It helps us confidently take on the role of inspiring and motivating ourselves and others.
For many women building their vision mindset means moving through yet more fears: being seen as bossy, too aggressive, not having anything new to say, not having enough experience…and so on.
